Darel Carey makes a flat surface feel anything but flat. Repeated lines and small shifts in spacing build into waves, ripples and the impression of depth. Take a step to the side, look again, and the pattern becomes something else. His practice spans immersive tape installations, painted murals and digital art.
Born in Curaçao and raised in Colton, California, Carey served as a language analyst in the US Air Force before leaving in 2012 to pursue art. He graduated from Otis College of Art and Design with a BFA in 2016 and is based in Los Angeles.
At Hopscotch Los Angeles, Carey brings that play with perception to two separate painted works: Razzle Dazzle on the building exterior and the black-and-white op art mural in the lounge.
