Matchless Builds

Portland, OregonFabrication · SculpturePortland

Matchless Builds is a Portland fabrication studio that started in 2018 as a small crew who "wanted to do something different." The sixteen-person team, co-founded by Ryan Everson and Kyle Woodman, pulls talent from a range of industries to turn unreasonable ideas into physical things. Their specialty is scenic fabrication, brand activations, and art builds, and their method pairs old-school craft (hand sculpting, woodworking, welding) with digital tools (CNC routing, 3D printing, laser cutting). The result has the precision of engineering and the texture of something built by actual hands.

We wanted to do something different.

The client list includes Nike, Adidas, Columbia, and The North Face, plus pop-ups, public art, fine furniture, and events for retailers around the Northwest. In February 2026, lead design engineer Sean Hilken and the studio showed Neurolith at the Portland Winter Light Festival, a branching LED form on the waterfront that echoes natural systems. Their Hopscotch exhibit has been covered by Willamette Week, Portland Monthly, the Portland Tribune, KATU, and PDX Parent, which singled it out as a visitor favorite.

That exhibit is Diodic Daydream, built for the June 2023 opening of Hopscotch Portland. It is an 800-square-foot glowing pool: 150,000 translucent balls, waist-deep, lit by 40,000 individually programmable LEDs that roll through slow waves of color. You wade in. Fundamentally, it is a ball pit, and it is also oddly calming; the light patterns are slow and hypnotic, and people settle into them and stay. It is consistently the most popular exhibit at Hopscotch Portland, and videos of it routinely pull millions of views on TikTok. What sets it apart from exhibits you only look at is that you are physically inside this one, up to your waist.

Diodic Daydream exists in two versions by two different studios. San Antonio's was built by POLIS Interactive. Portland's is the Matchless build, and it is the larger of the two, with more LEDs and more balls, made a few miles from where it lives.
