Caitlin Pashalek’s first series of large paintings: crisp geometric blocks and charcoal she sifts from her own campfires. They look solid until they don’t.
Caitlin Pashalek paints on her studio floor, and the floor gets a say. Each canvas is the size of the open space there, and the side that sits downhill becomes the dark side. Underneath sit layers of paint, many of them false starts she painted out, a leathery ground that gives the charcoal somewhere to settle. On a clean canvas, it does not work the same.
